Ratings and Reviews

"This vintage is usually favoured by connoisseurs because of its tension and typicity. 1995 was the watershed vintage between the cold and the warm years in the 1990s. 'September was very rainy up to the 22nd, but then October was as dry as July and August'. For late-ripening varieties such as Sangiovese and Cabernet, this was a classic vintage. Here, those two varieties were still blended with Canaiolo, a precious contributor to this wine. Dense garnet in the glass, restrained aromas of rhubarb root, quite raw yet typical cherry, and great integrity and freshness. Slightly austere and definitely angular on the palate, it flows with an amazing liquorice finish. Incredibly well defined." - Aldo Fiordelli, Decanter, Sep 2020

About the wine & the Estate The best bottles one could hope to find for a celebration for a year are those that largely stay in the producers cellars for majority of their life untouched. While technological advances over the last two decades mean even some of the smaller producers are now able to produce age worthy wines provided they own land in such a terroir, this wasn't always the case. When you go back 30-40 years, with majority of the land farmed by peasant farmers, there weren't a lot of wineries in the old world in Italy and France with the financial and technological means to make a great bottle, have the ability to control and reduce the yield without losing their daily bread, and have the place and ability to store bottles for decades. The Contini Bonacossi family was one such passionate group who used their legacy and love for wines to sink roots in the land of Carmignano, Tuscany known to produce great wines since 804 AD.

When a rare opportunity arose where the winery allowed us ordering of the back vintages from their cellars, we scooped up the bottles from all the years we thought Tuscany and Capezzana's flagship excelled. These 1995s are from those bottles.

Villa di Capezzana was first produced in 1925 as a super tuscan blend and has continued to earn admiration from the world over for it's incredibly long ageing. Having had the privilege of trying out 80 yr old bottles from the winery which were beautifully, when the opportunity presented, we thought these would be the kind of bottles our customers would love to buy and open for their big milestones.

A blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon is aged for over a year in tonneaux and around another 12 months in bottle. These wines stayed in the producer cellars for 26yrs before landing on the shores of Singapore early 2021. Now resting in our cellars. Very limited stock.

The producer

Tenuta di Capezzana Carmignano, Italy

Winemaking at Carmignano is almost as old as wine itself — Etruscan artefacts point to vineyards here 3,000 years ago, and a 9th-century parchment records vines and olives on the Capezzana estate over 1,200 years ago. In 1716 Cosimo III de' Medici named Carmignano one of Tuscany's superior wine zones.

Carmignano's growers were blending Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon in the 18th century — long before the 'Super Tuscan' movement made the practice famous. Capezzana, farmed by the Contini Bonacossi family since 1920, is the estate that carries this legacy.
