Tasting notes

2018 Vintage
"The nose is marvelously umami and meaty, while also ripe with plums and blueberries and crackling with pepper. Dark fruit and pepper continue on the palate, with grassy, metallic soil undertones. The acidity is lively around tannins that are firm but not rigid, even if they have time to spare." 94/100, Danielle Callegari, Wine Enthusiast

"Black walnut husk, game and truffle chocolate to the plums and dark cherries. Medium- to full-bodied palate with firm and fine-grained tannins that glide through to a juicy, bright finish. Lovely austerity here will help it hold. From organically grown grapes. Drink or keep." 93/100, James Suckling, Nov/2022

2016 Vintage
"Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon and Canaiolo make up the Tenuta di Capezzana 2016 Carmignano Riserva Trefiano. This expression shows poise and balance with dark fruit, leather, spice and tobacco. Fruit from a classic vintage has shaped a wine with classic lines. The blended reds of Carmignano offer distinctive richness and dark fruit intensity. This wine faithfully mirrors that sense of place. Dusty mineral notes appear on the close." 93/100, Monica Larner, Robert Parker, Dec 2020

The Wine
While the Villa di Capezanna has long been the flagship wine, Trefiano is the single vineyard bottling that has further carried the Capezzana mantle into critical acclaim and popularity. Trefiano is a demanding labour of love from vineyard planting to bottle ageing. The wine comes from focused vineyard selection, dramatically reduced yields, and careful blending followed by long ageing and maturation.

Trefiano Riserva is the riserva bottling from the estate of Capezzana with the super Tuscan blend of Sangiovese with Cabernet and has created waves. It further shows the winemaking finesse of Capezzana. The Riserva, produced in very small quantities is aged about eighteen months in tonneaux before being aged for a further two years in the bottle. The strong focus on organic farming especially, is beginning to show across the portfolio, more so for the Trefiano Riserva.

2016 has been the blockbuster year for Tuscany and Trefiano has taken all that limelight and season sparkle to bring out the best.

The producer

Tenuta di Capezzana Carmignano, Italy

Winemaking at Carmignano is almost as old as wine itself — Etruscan artefacts point to vineyards here 3,000 years ago, and a 9th-century parchment records vines and olives on the Capezzana estate over 1,200 years ago. In 1716 Cosimo III de' Medici named Carmignano one of Tuscany's superior wine zones.

Carmignano's growers were blending Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon in the 18th century — long before the 'Super Tuscan' movement made the practice famous. Capezzana, farmed by the Contini Bonacossi family since 1920, is the estate that carries this legacy.
