Tasting notes

The flag bearer, the pioneer, proudly carrying the weight of the enormous Carmignano legacy of quality wines for centuries, Villa di Capezzana is a true icon. Starting 1925, this super Tuscan blend in many ways had already been around for decades vowing the audience before the wine world became smitten with the super Tuscan movement.

While on an average the Villa di Capezzana is aged for about 2 yrs, first in French barriques and tonneaux and then in bottles, starting 2006 vintage, the producer started keeping aside a small selection, about 500 cases, to be released on the 10th anniversary of the vintage. 2010 10th anniversary bottles are sublime. Coming from a recent super star vintage, the 10th anni treatment has made the wine earn even more glowing accolades.

Tenuta di Capezzana Carmignano, Italy

Winemaking at Carmignano is almost as old as wine itself — Etruscan artefacts point to vineyards here 3,000 years ago, and a 9th-century parchment records vines and olives on the Capezzana estate over 1,200 years ago. In 1716 Cosimo III de' Medici named Carmignano one of Tuscany's superior wine zones.

Carmignano's growers were blending Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon in the 18th century — long before the 'Super Tuscan' movement made the practice famous. Capezzana, farmed by the Contini Bonacossi family since 1920, is the estate that carries this legacy.
