It is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes and it has a full and refreshing taste. It is the result of the transient encounter with the must of the Sangiovese grapes’ skin. The skins are left in contact with the liquid for only one night until achieving the desired coloration and the necessary complexity. Subsequently, the skins are separated, and the fermentation takes place at low temperatures in stainless steel vats for few days. The wine is bottled following about few months of refinement and released into the market when we think that is finally ready. The bottle of this rose wine has a glass pink cork to preserve the quality and the authentic taste of this wine.

During the last few years Rose wine finally gained the attention it long deserved and the consumption of it started to rise. However just few years back for some reason the general public believed that Rose was done purely from the second-hand grapes that somehow were not good enough for the production of the red wines. This misconception is not applicable to Rose di Montemaggio, which is done from 100% Sangiovese (same as Classico, Riserva and Gran Selezione) but taken from a different part of the vine lines and different parts of the estate. We try to pick earlier then the full maturation in order to increase the acidity, and hence decrease the alcohol. As a result we have a very fresh wine, with a lot of vivid colour – an ideal summer (or not only) companion. Make sure to notice the glass cork too – which saves a lot of wine from the defects of the cork, but still remains a sophisticated and classy method of bottle closure. You can then recycle it as a jar for the water or olive oil. The current vintage is 2021.

Grape Variety: 100% Sangiovese. Growing system: Predominantly Spurred Cordon. Colombini family that runs Fattoria dei Barbi is one such family. The second oldest estate in Montalcino, it's pioneer non pareil. The estate extends over 306 hectares (around 757 acres) at Montalcino and Scansano. Stefano Cinelli Colombini, heir of the ancient Sienese line that has been present in Montalcino since 1352, runs this family property. Stefano and Fattoria Dei Barbi have also been key contributors in helping Montalcino develop into the current attraction to the outside world.

The Fattoria has always been a careful custodian of tradition, but also attentive to innovation and a pioneer in every sphere of winemaking. It was the first firm in Montalcino to export bottled wine to France (1817), the first to sell Brunello by mail order (1832), the first to export it to America (1962), England (1969) and Japan (1975). In the 1960s the estate was a pioneer in using organic fertilizers, in the 1990s it created the first “artificial nose” for analyzing wine, and in 2000 was one of the first to use carbon dioxide for cold fermentation of red wines.

The 66 hectares of the farm have an average density of about 5,000 vines and produce on the average less than 1.5 kg of grapes per vine; thus each vine produces only a little more than one bottle of wine. The process of selection for these grapes is as rigorous as for other grapes in Montemaggio. After the harvest and various stages of selection, the must is fermenting at controlled temperature in order to preserve all the fruit and aromas of the future wine. The Biondi-Santis have been cultivating grapes and making wine here since at least the mid-1800's. In the late 1800s, Ferruccio Biondi-Santi, the son of Clemente Santi and Jacopo Biondi, isolated a clone of Sangiovese, known today as Sangiovese Grosso, and began vinifying it on its own, without white grapes, as was then the custom. In doing so, Ferruccio Biondi-Santi invented the wine known today as Brunello di Montalcino. For most of the last several decades, Il Greppo was managed by, Ferruccio's grandson, Franco Biondi-Santi. It's still hard to believe that Franco Biondi-Santi, the patriarch of Montalcino, passed away in early 2013. The Biondi-Santi Brunellos are known for their sense of classic austerity, and, above all else, their ability to age. Indeed, even at 30, 40 and 50 years of age, the wines retain searing acidity and considerable tannin. talian wines in general are meant for the dinner table, and that is certainly the case here. The flagship Riserva is sourced from the estate's oldest vines, which sit at 500 meters above sea level on soils that consist mostly of galestro, a mix of rocks and sand that is characteristic of certain spots in Tuscany. The Riserva is fermented in wood uprights and aged in neutral oak casks. During the era in which these wines were made, the malolactic fermentations were spontaneous and mostly occurred in the spring following the harvest. The still-vivid ruby colour with garnet rim announces the impressive freshness of the wine. The nose is scented with an old aristocratic style dominated by pot-pourri but also encompassing fruits, black pepper and tarmac, with flinty minerality in depth. The 1971 isn't as big or powerful as the 1975, but it is a bit longer on the palate, more subtle and extremely refined. Crushed flowers, tobacco, mint and dried cherries linger on the silky finish. Although still quite fresh, I expect the 1971 will offer its best drinking over the next decade or so. Tasted next to the 1975, the 1971 Riserva is quite a bit more feminine and delicate. It, too, only grows with time in the glass. Brooding sweetness on the nose with hints of gingerbread. Layers of complex, waxy fruit and lots of depth here. Was this a warmer vintage than the 1975? The flagship Riserva is sourced from the estate's oldest vines, which sit at 500 meters above sea level on soils that consist mostly of galestro, a mix of rocks and sand that is characteristic of certain spots in Tuscany. The Riserva is fermented in wood uprights and aged in neutral oak casks. Here too, the small blending element of Cabernet Franc has been slowly increasing in recent years. The 2019 vintage was born with a good amount of power and tannic structure, and maceration times were slightly reduced as a result. The vines were stressed, and a lot of fine tuning and management was needed in the vineyards and in the winery to get the best results. But what I love so much about this 2017 is that Carlo Paoli and the Tenuta San Guido team have done a brilliant job. There is a lovely harmony on the palate and a lovely mouth-watering freshness and acidity which is a signature of Sassicaia but more of a challenge in this vintage. This vintage is a precise reflection of Coastal Tuscany, as opposed to a more generic 'Tuscan' wine from elsewhere in this large central Italian region. You taste the ripeness and soft fruit weight that comes from a coastal appellation with especially bright luminosity and warm Mediterranean offshore breezes. Sassicaia from the cool vintages is a famously reticent or withholding wine in its earliest years, requiring a long lead time before it eases into an ideal drinking window. That's definitely not the case here. This wine is beautiful and compelling straight out of the gate, showing a lovely mix of dark fruit, oak spice, balanced freshness, textural richness, soft tannins and an expertly contained 14% alcohol content. The wine's immediate character is what distinguishes this vintage, and I wouldn't get too fussed by exaggerated cellar-aging ambitions. Spring was mild and summer was generally warm, but a rapid acceleration of maturation in late summer forced the team to begin picking in the first week of September to avoid any overripeness. A traditional 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc blend, its blackcurranty, dusty, leafy and cedary character is brought into focus by an intense and balsamic palate. It's poised and light on its feet with super-fresh acidity and a fine-grained, almost imperceptible tannic structure. Ripe and tangy raspberry and blueberry fruits linger on the mid-palate, leading to a long, fresh finish with some cream and chocolate notes.
