The Nebbiolo grape is particularly color sensitive, and the 2017 Barolo Gattera sees its fruit sourced from 70-year-old vines in La Morra, a site that is already earmarked for its delicate and nuanced approach. The bouquet is broad and not totally defined here, with some exotic fruit that is mixed with wild berry and peach blossom. The wine opens faster and more completely once poured into the glass. The fruit is dark, and there's a wide range of aromas with dried cherry and plum, all backed by thick brush strokes of tobacco and spice. Gattera shows more heft and textural richness. They are located at the centre of a land with an extraordinary vocation for growing nebbiolo, a vine which produces wines with remarkable character and structure perfect for ageing. This is the birthplace of Barolo OtinFiorin Piè Rupestris: it is 100% Serralunga in its character ‒ a paradigmatic wine thanks to its severe and authoritative tone, with an austere but also generous and sharing manner ‒ as well as in the organoleptic characteristics: liquorice, juniper, tar, balsamic notes, spices and undergrowth are just the most recognisable and typical expressions of an aromatic patrimony which sketches, year after year, a veritable narration of the land. In this classic vintage, I prefer the more-delicate Arborina, but both wines are excellent. The estate farms 3.5 hectares in Gattera, but fruit for this wine comes from 70-year-old vines found in a 1.5-hectare sub parcel. Fruit comes from 40-year-old vines and skin maceration times are slightly longer (lasting from 22 to 25 days), giving the wine more power. It wraps smoothly and completely over the palate, imparting sweet fruit, wild rose, blood orange and grilled herb along the way. Here, Alessandro Veglio today manages a plot of 40-year-old vines in the middle of the hill, between 240 and 270 metres above sea level with a southeast to east exposure over sandstone soil (more so than the lower plots). The wine packs a punch for its multifaceted aromas of peony and violet, wild strawberry and blood orange. Both violets and oranges come back on the palate, not ungainly woven with firm tannins. It's full on the mid-palate, with almost-zesty acidity and a sweet, ripe finish. The wine is aged in large French untoasted oak casks for 24 months.
