The Nebbiolo grape is particularly color sensitive, and the 2017 Barolo Gattera sees its fruit sourced from 70-year-old vines in La Morra, a site that is already earmarked for its delicate and nuanced approach. The bouquet is broad and not totally defined here, with some exotic fruit that is mixed with wild berry and peach blossom. Fruit comes from 40-year-old vines and skin maceration times are slightly longer (lasting from 22 to 25 days), giving the wine more power. It wraps smoothly and completely over the palate, imparting sweet fruit, wild rose, blood orange and grilled herb along the way. Aged in large oak casks, the Paiagallo is tight and structured at this young stage, and the wine will loosen up and soften with more time in the bottle. Production is 4,000 bottles." 95/100, Monica Larner, Robert Parker, Aug'2022

"This 2018 is the third vintage of Mauro Veglio's Paiagallo. Here, Alessandro Veglio today manages a plot of 40-year-old vines in the middle of the hill, between 240 and 270 metres above sea level with a southeast to east exposure over sandstone soil (more so than the lower plots). The wine packs a punch for its multifaceted aromas of peony and violet, wild strawberry and blood orange. Both violets and oranges come back on the palate, not ungainly woven with firm tannins. It's full on the mid-palate, with almost-zesty acidity and a sweet, ripe finish. The wine is aged in large French untoasted oak casks for 24 months. A great example of the 2018 vintage." 95/100, Aldo Fiordelli, Decanter, Jan'2021

"Floral aromas recalling red rose mingle with menthol, woodland berry and dark spice. Firm and elegantly structured, the bright, savory palate delivers ripe Morello cherry, orange zest and licorice alongside tightly wound, fine-grained tannins. It's young and nervous, with vibrant acidity. Garnet in colour, it has notes of watermelon, earthy strawberry and lemon leaf. Elegance and freshness prevail over the powerful palate. Nevertheless, it is full bodied, well extracted and with sweet tannins. Citrus notes and liquorice emerge on the finish. The wine is abridged, abrupt and extra contoured in terms of mouthfeel, with sharp edges and firm tannic structure that both need a little extra time to soften and flesh out. Fruit is drawn from a small parcel in Paiagallo, in the comune of Barolo, that measures less than one hectare and is situated at 300 meters above sea level. The vines are 35 years old on average. The 2016 Barolo Paiagallo is a beautiful wine, slightly open and accessible with a soft and gentle quality of fruit. It delivers delicate tones of wild berries, dark plum and pressed violets. Vivid and translucent, with terrific energy, the 2016 is a real standout. In the glass, the 2016 is potent yet refined, with exceptional balance and so much promise. I can't wait to see how it ages, especially once the tannins have started to soften a bit. Time in the glass brings out the wine's dark, virile feel, as well as quite a bit of power.
