This is one of the largest single blocks of vines in Margaux, as well as in all of the Medoc.\u003cbr\u003eIt is important to note that their vineyard is also one of the few estates that is the same size today, as it was at the time of the 1855 Classification of the Medoc where it acheived the 5th growth classification.\u003cbr\u003eThe terroir is mostly gravel, with some sand soils on two, gentle, sloping hills. The elevation close to the chateau graduates up to 27 meters, making it one of the highest peaks in the Margaux appellation. The location for much of the vineyard is situated close to a forest, which produces a slightly cooler, micro-climate.\u003cbr\u003eThe cooler ambient temperature adds more freshness to the wines. Geographically, they are next to their sister property, Chateau Giscours. In fact, only a small stream separates the two vineyards. Owner Gerard Perse has given the same attention to this vineyard as Chateau Pavie since he bought over the two in the late 1990s. With similar terroir and a blend that comprises 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet franc, the wines of Gerard Perse are big and bold with alcohol in excess of 15%. And perhaps aptly so, his wines also have the added distinction of having split the wine critic world into two, right down the middle with the likes of Robert Parker and Jancis Robinson sitting poles apart on their view of this Chateau. A quick look up of the 2005, 2009 or the 2010 vintage on wine-searcher, as the scores clearly show, suggests the esteemed jury is still sitting on two different banks of the river with Parker and team rating the wine in the high ninetees while Jancis Robinson and Tim Atkin barely giving it a pass.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe estate is located on the Saint-Emilion limestone plateau, approximately 85 meters above the Dordogne River. I’ll try not to give too many spoilers if you haven’t yet seen No Time To Die, but I don’t think it gives too much away to say that Bond can’t resist swiping two generous glasses of Château Angélus (2005, although you don’t see the vintage on screen) for himself and Moneypenny from a bottle that Q had carefully opened for his date later that night.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis is the third Bond film in which Angélus has made an appearance; the 1982 was drunk by Vesper Lynd and Bond on the train to Montenegro in Casino Royale, while the 2005 vintage can be spotted in Spectre.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe association with Bond has taken the already-famous label – pale yellow, distinctive black writing surrounding a golden bell – to an audience of billions worldwide. So far, so clever product placement.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBut the bell, as with so much of the story of this wine, is not just smart marketing but an authentic symbol of the roots and location of the winery itself. It has been on every Angélus label since the 1945 vintage, and is a reference to the bells that you can hear from this spot – on the northwestern edges of St-Emilion. Here, in the biggest of the communes that surround the town, to its west, there are records of vines growing as far back as the 12th century.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe vines are on south-facing slopes that follow a natural amphitheatre shape, from where you can hear the ringing bells of three neighbouring church towers – belonging to the Mazerat chapel, St-Martin-de-Mazerat church and the main St-Emilion church.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEven the name Angélus is a reference to these bells ringing out the call to the Angelus prayer, which used to punctuate the working day in the morning, noon and evening. There are very few family-owned estates in Bordeaux that have been in the same hands since before the French Revolution. Still fewer that have gone on to become classified châteaux in Bordeaux rankings – on either bank, Left or Right.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAnd yet Château Angélus has been owned by the Bouärd de Laforest family since 1782, when Jean de Bouärd de Laforest bought a plot of vines in St-Martin-de-Mazerat. So both on the nose and the palate it reaches this happy medium: pure blackberry, graphite and roasted herbs on the nose, perhaps even more elegant than I have observed on previous bottles. The palate is medium-bodied rather than full bodied with sturdy tannins couched in layers of seamless blackberry and cassis fruit, offset by scents of tobacco and graphite. As usual it has immense length and depth, a Montrose that is really just a few chapters into what is sure to be a longer 'book' than many other 2003s.
